What This Tool Does
Compress Image uses the browser-image-compression library to re-encode your photo at a chosen quality level and optionally limit the longest edge to a maximum pixel dimension. After compression, it shows the original and compressed file sizes so you can judge whether the trade-off is acceptable. The output file keeps the same format as the input.

Step-by-Step Guide
- Upload your image (max 25 MB, one file per session).
- Move the Quality slider — lower values produce smaller files with more visible compression.
- Adjust Max dimension to cap the longest side in pixels if you want dimension reduction alongside compression.

- Review the original vs. compressed size comparison and re-adjust sliders if the result is too large or too degraded.
Limitations
Compression is lossy for JPEG and WebP output — you cannot recover original quality from the compressed file. PNG compression helps mainly when the image has large flat areas; photographic PNGs may not shrink dramatically. One image is processed at a time. On low-memory devices, compressing a 25 MB high-resolution photo may fail or take noticeably longer.
Common Mistakes
- Setting quality too low on the first try — Start around 80% and lower gradually rather than jumping to 30%.
- Compressing already-compressed images repeatedly — Each pass adds artifacts. Compress once from the highest-quality source available.
- Expecting PNG photos to shrink like JPEG — Photographic content in PNG format is often larger than JPEG; consider converting to JPG if transparency is not needed.
